Continuing our study of Luke chapter 10, this week we’re looking at verses 38 – 42. Please read these verses every day this week and, if possible use a different translation each day, asking God to open your eyes to fresh revelation from His Word.

Luke 10:39 (NIV)

‘She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.’

Much of my early school days are a dim and distant memory. Most of what happened is completely forgotten and there only just a few ‘glimpses’ into very brief moments of learning and enjoyment.

However, I do seem to recall one moment that in all honesty, may or may not have occurred in exactly the way I remember. When I was very, very young I had one particular teacher who I really liked. The others were simply forgotten but Ms Curtain will always remain in my memory.

She had a love for the English language that she exuded with every breath. At every possible opportunity she would try to engender a passion for words and their meaning. We would spend hours learning spelling and would have many, many tests to prove we were progressing. I dread to think what she would make of current teaching methodologies!

One vivid memory is of her leaning against the desk at the front of the class, with all the children seated on the floor in a half circle in front of her. We sat there cross legged, heads lifted up, transfixed by her as she read from some classic literature. Each word was pronounced perfectly and she would occasionally ask for volunteers to spell any words that she felt were of particular importance. I would learn to love reading just because of this dear elderly lady.

The picture Luke is presenting to us today is very similar to my experience in my youth. Mary had one goal and that was to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to what He had to say. It’s important to note that sitting at someone’s feet is full of meaning.

It was very common for anyone who wanted to learn anything to sit at the feet of their teacher. The apostle Paul says in the book of Acts that he was “brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel and taught…”. It is a posture of submission to a higher authority and a sign of a willing spirit to learn and be guided.

Someone once said that ‘You will do nothing that is worth doing if you do not do it as the outcome of sitting at the feet of Jesus.’

What an amazing thought that is. If we want to achieve anything in life, firstly we should submit everything to His Lordship and bow at His feet in surrender. If we want to live a life that is full of meaning and purpose, the beginning of that path is found at the feet of Jesus.

My prayer today is that each one of us learn to commit each day to the Lord while humbly bowing at the feet of the One who loved us and gave Himself for us. His plans for us are awesome. Let us listen to His Word and walk in faith the path that He sets before us.
