6  For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

7  For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die.

8  But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Thought for the day:

I’m sure that most of the people reading this devotion would have seen a news clip showing some kind of protest. It is very common these days for people to take to the streets armed with placards describing their particular grievance or objection to something or other. One word associated with such a crowd is a ‘demonstration’. When we look at the people, we can generally work out what it is that they are ‘demonstrating’ and can see without doubt what the message is that they are conveying. You see, there should always be a reason for the demonstration and there should be a clarity about the position held by those who are doing the demonstrating.

Verse 8 of Romans 5 is incredible in so many ways and briefly today, we’re going to take a look at some basic truths.

  1. ‘Christ died for us’ – His death on the cross was no accident. It wasn’t a result of Roman or Jewish aggression. This was God’s plan of Salvation being supremely carried out by the perfect sacrifice. There was a reason for His death – our salvation.

  2. ‘While we were still sinners’ – Verse 7 gives an incredible picture for us to envisage: It is entirely possible that some people may give their lives for good people, for righteous people. I’d like to think that if it was necessary, I would give my life for my wife and children. However, God tells us that He gave His life for us when we were at our worst. We were still sinners when Christ died for us. Yes, He could see the joy that was set before Him, and there is nothing we can do that would make Him love us more. Likewise there is nothing that we can do or have done that makes Him love us less.

  3. ‘God demonstrates His love’ – When we look at the cross, we should see nothing other than a demonstration of God’s love. Every aspect of His death speaks the message of love. Each detail is like a placard revealing the incredible love of God poured out on the cross. It is the best kind of demonstration and the most effective.

“Amazing love, how could it be that You my King would die for me?”. Only in eternity will be able to come close to understanding completely how much we are loved by Almighty God. Take some time today to say Thank you!
